Zynga sues Bang With Friends

Zynga, the game studio behind many Facebook games that end in “Ville”, has filed a legal action against the company behind the “casual sex matchmaking app” called Bang With Friends.

Launched in January, Bang With Friends lets Facebook users discreetly express interest in a sexual encounter with friends within the social network. Bang With Friends, Inc. says it the app has over one million registered users.

Zynga has filed a trademark infringement complaint against Bang With Friends in a San Francisco court, alleging that the defendant stepped on Zynga’s own trademarked games like Words With Friends and Chess With Friends.

In the complaint, Zynga has said Bang With Friends deliberately selected the name “for its casual sex matchmaking app with Zynga’s game trademarks fully in mind.”

According to the firm’s Deputy General Counsel Renée Lawson, Zynga wants to halt Bang With Friends’ “blatant infringement of its valuable ‘With Friends’ brand.”

“A company calling itself ‘Bang With Friends’ – whose own founders played Zynga’s ‘With Friends’ games – decided to gain attention for its sex-related app by leveraging Zynga’s well-known mark.” Lawson says in a written statement. “Zynga is compelled to file suit to prevent further consumer confusion and protect its intellectual property rights against infringement.”

Bang With Friends, Inc. says it has yet to receive the court papers, adding that it only heard about the complaint through media reports.

“As a technology company, we take intellectual property seriously, and will evaluate the case in detail once we receive a copy,” the company says to BBC.
