Samsung Galaxy Gear launch date confirmed

A senior executive of Samsung has confirmed the company will unveil its first smartwatch on September 4. Lee Young-hee, Samsung Mobile’s executive vice president, revealed in an interview with The Korea Times that the Samsung Galaxy Gear launch will be held in Berlin, Germany, during the annual IFA consumer electronics fair.

Just like what unnamed sources revealed to Bloomberg, the Samsung Galaxy Gear will not have a flexible display.

“The Gear won’t have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many way,” Lee said. “It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry.”

However, Lee hinted the company is working on introducing more advanced models, using Samsung’s patents and concepts for its next wearable devices.

Samsung is targeting the “young trend setters” with its first smartwatch, a market that is slowly blossoming. Sony is among the first companies to unveil a smartwatch, as the smartphone market is slowly coming to saturation point.

Apart from the Samsung Galaxy Gear launch, Lee revealed there will also be a formal international debut of its Galaxy Note3 during the IFA. She, however, kept mum about the details of the new phablet — a hybrid of smartphone and tablet.
