Apart from the Galaxy S5, Samsung also launches a bevy of smartwatches at the Mobile World Congress. We shall tackle two of the new wearable devices in this post, including the successor to Galaxy Gear.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 appears to be an improvement of its predecessor, while the Samsung Galaxy Gear Neo is a much sleeker version. Both smartwatches can be used as a companion to the user’s smartphone, wherein you can receive notifications on incoming calls, text messages, and other alerts. They have a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display with 320 x 320 resolution, 1.0GHz dual-core processor, and a 2-megapixel camera with autofocus. Both smartwatches can record video at 720p resolution and support microphone input.

The Gear 2 also works as a standalone music player. Just transfer the music you have on your smartphone wirelessly and easily so the smartwatch plays your workout music independently.

Both devices contain health sensors such as heart rate monitors, pedometers, and sleep monitoring. They also ditched the Android in favor of Tizen OS, but little changes can be seen on the OS itself. The two smartwatches even contain an accelerometer and heart gyroscope.

Despite all these added sensors, the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 and the Gear Neo can last for up to six days under light use conditions, or up to three days in normal usage, an improvement from the very short battery life of Samsung’s first-gen smartwatch.

The Gear 2’s ecosystem comes with way more app, as well as a direct TV connectivity using its built-in IR blaster. Samsung has also offered the Gear SDK to third-party developers so they can create apps around the new smartwatches.

As for compatibility, they can be paired with 16 difference Galaxy devices, so unlike the first Galaxy Gear wherein it can be paired with just the Galaxy Note 3.

Both the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo will ship on April 11 in close to 150 countries.
