Samsung Crazy Fast 256GB SSD

It was in May when Samsung announced their plan to produce a super-fast yet affordable 256GB SSD by the end of 2008. Well, they are here. The manufacturing of the SSDs for use in desktop PCs and notebooks has started, and Samsung has elaborated about the claims of "disruptive" performance. Doubling the performance rates of the Samsung 64GB and 128GB SSDs, the new SSD has now the highest overall performance in the PC industry.

The 256GB SSDs are reported to offer speed similar "to having a 15,000rpm drive, without all of its size, noise, power and heating drawbacks." The Samsung 256GB SSDs combine sequential read rates of 220 mbps with sequential write rates of 200 mbps, reducing the read/write speed gap to around 10%. Samsung also claims that they have decreased power consumption to 1.1w.

According to Jim Elliott, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.’s vice president for memory marketing, "Getting our exceptionally high performing 256GB SSD in a notebook is analogous to having a 15,000rpm drive, without all of its size, noise, power and heating drawbacks." This sounds great, it is cost that will win the SSD war. Samsung is not dishing out a price on its 256GB yet.
