NTT DoCoMo Might Enter US Market

NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s top mobile phone service provider, is considering providing its services in the American market starting 2010.  Sources say they plan on offering smartphones and other high-performance handsets that feature its "i-mode" mobile Internet service.  It would be the first time a Japan-based service provider will attempt to break into the overseas market, sources add.

It could also be the solution to Japan’s Galapagos syndrome in the smartphone industry.  We all know how Japanese handsets can be so advanced, but these are virtually unusable when brought on its own (without a compatible service provider) to other countries.

Sources also claim that NTT DoCoMo may start as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), leasing capacity from an established US provider like T-Mobile or AT&T, with which its American unit already has business ties.
