As Nokia completely gives off its entire mobile business unit to Microsoft, it does not mean the Finnish device maker will sit around doing nothing. The Wall Street Journal reported that a Nokia Android-based smartphone is actually in the works, with an expected debut at the Mobile World Congress two weeks from now.
The report claims that Nokia has been developing an Android mobile device while Microsoft got down to the nitty-gritty of the transaction. Both companies announced in September that Microsoft would be acquiring Nokia’s mobile division and patents for a whopping $7.4 billion.
The Nokia Android device will be available in emerging markets and will not include key features commonly seen on similar devices, such as access to Google Play Store. Instead, the smartphone would be Nokia’s update on its low-cost Asha handsets.
Both Microsoft and Nokia have yet to respond on the rumor.
