Motorola was supposed to release its low-cost Moto G smartphone to the United States by January, but lo and behold that gadget hits retail last Tuesday. The Motorola Moto G, at least its GSM variant, is now available on Motorola.com for $179 without a carrier contract. Shipping begins December 2.
In an interview with CNET, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said early demand for the Moto G has been strong outside the US and was able to speed up the manufacturing process faster than expected, hence the early release of this budget smartphone. Also, it’s a two days away from Black Friday, so the timing couldn’t be any more perfect.
Nevertheless, the January launch of Motorola Moto G will push through as planned, as carrier and retail partners (most prominently Verizon Wireless) take advantage of the strong prepaid market during the early months of 2014.
“We were always gearing up for a big first quarter, but we think we’ll have success this quarter as well,” Woodside added.
The Moto G is a less expensive counterpart of the Motorola Moto X, the flagship smartphone that enables customers to tweak how the device looks with custom colors and accents.
