How can you fight a tech company that offers most of its software for free? If you are Microsoft, fight fire with fire.

Wzor, a Russian blog known for leaking Windows updates before they go live, has revealed screenshots that indicate a free Windows 8.1 targeting users of past versions of Windows, who are traditionally subjected to high fees if they want to switch to Windows’ tile-clad OS. The software, which will be called Windows 8.1 with Bing, is Microsoft’s way of battling the looming threat of Android and Chromebooks.

The leak included photos of Internet Explorer and Bing Maps. Sources say that this free Windows 8.1 upgrade, ideally for Windows 7 users, will also monetize various Microsoft services integrated into the software, including Bing, OneDrive, as well as Xbox Music and Video. They also suspect Windows 8.1 with Bing could be a stockholder SKU that has Office 2010 Starter Edition, a version that has reduced functionalities.

Microsoft may unveil Windows 8.1 with Bing during the company’s Build conference in April, which may also include details about updates on Windows 8.1 and the slow merger of Windows Phone and Windows RT.
