Lord of the Rings Online Now Free To Play

The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) inspired from J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic series of novels, has been around for quite some time, but it cannot seem to duplicate the success achieved by World of Warcraft. This is probably why Turbine, the developer behind LOTRO, plans on dropping the subscription membership and will be free to play beginning this fall. Players can download the game free of charge and can play online without any subscription fee.

The game, however, will follow the footsteps of MMORPGs in Asia and will sell higher-level items and quests per piece. Players are not required to buy them, but it will enhance their gaming experience. Those who have already subscribed to the game will then be upgraded to VIP status, while founding members will also get VIP status and can keep all the membership privileges as long as they pay the monthly fee.

Applications for beta testing, which is said to begin on June 16, are currently being accepted.
