About half a month after getting leaked online, the LG G Flex gets its official launch recently. In what the South Korean company claims as the first “real” curved smartphone, this gadget sports a curved design in both the screen and body.

The curved device comes with a 6-inch OLED display with 720p resolution, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel camera at the back.

The LG G Flex was released at the heels of Samsung Galaxy Round, another curved smartphone but has a different design. The Galaxy Round has a screen that is bent left to right, while the G Flex is curved vertically or top to bottom.

In a statement, LG claims the G Flex’s curved design is optimized “for the average face”, which the company hopes to deliver better voice and audio quality. LG adds the curved form also provides better grip, as well as a much improved viewing experience when watching media content in landscape mode.

And here is something we did not anticipate when the smartphone first leaked: the back of the device is coated with a “special elastic coating” that LG claims would allow the case to “heal itself” from minor scratches.

The LG G Flex is initially available in South Korea beginning next month. No details yet on the price and whether it will be released elsewhere.
