LG has unveiled its first smartphone that runs on Firefox OS. The LG Fireweb joins the likes of ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire as the few and proud gadgets that run on the HTML 5-based operating system from Mozilla Foundation.
The 4-inch LG Fireweb is being shipped to Brazil initially, with local carrier Telefónica retailing this and the One Touch Fire in the country. The carrier also plans on rolling this Firefox phone “soon” to Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay.
The release of LG Fireweb comes after Mozilla announced it would launch devices with Firefox OS in new markets all over the world. The ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire, for instance, rolled out last summer in Poland, Colombia, Venezuela, and Spain.
The entry-level LG Fireweb features a HVGA TFT touchscreen with 480 x 320 resolution, a 1GHz 3G Qualcomm processor, and 2GB memory. It also comes with a 5-megapixel camera and LED flash. Users would be able to gain access to Firefox Marketplace for apps
Vivo, Telefónica’s Brazilian subsidiary, is now offering the LG Fireweb for $207 to PAYG users and $59 for subscribers.
