Free-To-Play Lord of the Rings Online Coming in September 10

After a round of beta testing, The Lord of the Rings Online will officially become free-to-play come September 10, 2010.

The MMORPG, which has been around for several years, has decided to follow what counterparts in Asia have been doing by allowing players to download and play the game without shelling a single cent, while providing premium weapons, armor, and items for purchase.

Meanwhile, another online game is also set to become F2P. It’s Everquest, although the free game will not have access to its recent expansion pack.

With the trend of North American MMORPGs becoming F2P, would the very popular World of Warcraft (which still charges US$15 a month) be far behind? Let’s wait and see.
