If you still think gender is just between male and female, despite recent studies saying gender is more of a spectrum than a dichotomy, well too bad.
But for those who believe their gender identities do not conform with t heir biological sex organs, you can finally make that identity solidified on Facebook. The largest social network has added a third “custom” gender option, where users can now choose from 50 more options like “transgender,” “cisgender,” “intersex,” and even “neither.”
They also now have the power to choose the pronoun they would like to be referred to publicly. A transgender female, for instance, would like to be called a “she”; others, meanwhile, may prefer a more gender-neutral “they.”
In a statement on its Diversity page, Facebook says they “want you to feel comfortable being your true, authentic self” when connecting with people and organizations they care about.
“An important part of this is the expression of gender, especially when it extends beyond the definitions of just ‘male’ or ‘female.’ So today, we’re proud to offer a new custom gender option to help you better express your own identity on Facebook.”
To edit your gender status, simply go to your Timeline and click “Update Info” at the bottom of your cover photo. Then, click “Edit” at the top right of the Basic Information section. Afterwhich, select “Custom” on the gender menu and a type box appears where you input your prefered gender identity. Click Save to finalize the procedure.
Other gender options include: Gender Variant, Gender Questioning, Bigender, Androgynous, Pangender, and Trans Person.
