Dell Mini 3i Smartphone Ready for China Debut

Dell and China Mobile share more details on Monday about the Dell Mini 3i smartphone which will be available in China later this month.

The Mini 3i is Dell’s first venture into the smartphone arena. Dell’s Mini 3i smartphone is Android-based, will support e-mail, instant messaging, both SMS (text) and MMS (multimedia). It will also feature Bluetooth and GPS capabilities, a mini USB connector plus a Micro SD slot (will accommodate up to 32GB).

The quadband GSM/EDGE phone is equipped with a 3-megapixel camera with zoom, auto-focus, flash, video capture and photo-editing functions. It also features a touchscreen with a 640×360 resolution. Dell has already announced earlier this month that the Mini 3i will have a 3.5 inch HD screen.

The Mini 3i will run on China Mobile’s Ophone software, a customized version of Google’s Android. And like other Android phones, the Mini 3i will give users access to an online store – China Mobile’s Mobile Market in this case – where they can download ringtones, games, wallpapers, applications. Users will also be able to run different widgets on the home screen to stay updated on the news, weather, sports news, etc.

Dell has been in talks with China Mobile for over a year regarding the development of the Mini 3i. The two companies collaborated earlier this year to integrate a 3G data card for Dell’s Inspiron Mini 10 netbook specifically for the Chinese market. According to Dell, China has over 500 million customers, making China Mobile the world’s largest mobile service provider.

The Mini 3i smartphone will hit China by the end of November and will be sold directly from Dell shortly afterward. The Mini 3i will be available in Red Passion and Oiled Bronze.
