Blizzard Backtracks about Posting Real Names in Forums

After a deluge of debate, complaints, and violent reactions, Blizzard gives in to their customers, declaring that real names will no longer be required to post on the official forums.

And the trolls rejoiced.

Mike Morhaime, the company’s co-founder and current CEO, wrote: “We’ve been constantly monitoring the feedback you’ve given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we’ve decided at this time that real names will not be required on official Blizzard forums.”

Nicholas Deleon of CrunchGear thinks that Blizzard may actually have no intention of requiring to include real names in forums anyway. They simply want how the public will react and boy, do they get a mouthful from players.

In our opinion, if Blizzard is intent on eliminating the trolls and the spammers in the forums, why not adopt a karma system used in other message boards. If a member thinks a post is a flame bait or shameless spam, he simply downgrades the post, or even the member who posted it, making them hidden from public view.
