Recent patent speculates about Apple curved smartphone.

Rumors begin to circulate about a possible Apple curved smartphone. This comes after AppleInsider has reported that the company behind the iconic iPhone has applied a patent for curved touchscreens and displays.

The patent application explains about creating a curve screen surface that is sensitive to touch and does not distort or deform the images the display would produce. Apple hopes to utilize the technology on touch-sensitive mice (like the Magic Mouse), touch pads, and mobile devices, fueling speculations that an Apple curved smartphone may be on the drawing board.

Darrell Etherington of TechCrunch explains how Apple’s recent patent application is different from existing technology involving curved glass displays. “Often the substrate that adds touch sensitivity to a device is flat, regardless of whether the glass panel that covers it is curved,” Etherington wrote. “As a result, touch sensitivty suffers, since sometimes a person’s finger is actually further away from the touch panel than it might appear.”

Other major tech companies such as Samsung and LG have recently introduced curved smartphones. While Apple remains mum about how will they apply their curved screen technology, it remains evident that the company is beginning to turn away from traditional designs.
