Apple announced that it has purchased Siri, a personal assistant for the iPhone. According to pre-merger notification released by the Federal Trade Commission, the transaction will not be held up by any antitrust reviews.
Siri allows iPhone users to ask it to perform tasks for you like finding a nearby restaurant and book a table, order a taxi cab, or look up for the phone number and address of a local business.
The acquisition can mean two things. First, Apple will add Siri as a default app for future iPhones and iPads. Second is that Apple could be interested in Siri’s underlying natural language processing and semantic search technology and plans on incorporating them into its apps more broadly.
