You may not have noticed it, but sports shoe technology is rapidly evolving. Breakthrough materials and design modifications give a little extra for the athletes to run faster, even by a millisecond. This is what Adidas Springblade hopes to bring with its slight modification: a spiky, springy sole.

The shoes’ blaze orange upper is difficult to ignore, while the bottom part features a plastic sole with “springs” jutting towards the heel. These 32 springs (16 on each foot), which are actually individually padded with Adidas’ propriety material, promise to bring a little extra life every time you step.

The tough plastic springs have the ability to spring your foot back into the air in every step. The Adidas Springblade weighs about 12 ounces and feels springier. Speaking of spring, a writer for Techcrunch has tried on a pair of Springblade and has witnessed how his maximum speed increased from 8 minutes per mile to just 7:50 per mile.

“(The Adidas Springblade) also wore me out far faster and I definitely felt a distinct soreness in my calves that I hadn’t experience in a while,” John Biggs wrote. “In short, at the very least these shoes changed my stride slightly.”

Biggs has advised his readers that the Springblade works better while running on concert, while it performs less on soft surfaces such as sand or trails.

The Adidas Springblade is now available for pre-order at $180.
